Our colleagues at MARH underwriting asked our assistant what had happened during the power outage. Here is an explanation for a general audience.

The story of the car that stopped abruptly

Imagine that the electricity system works like a car on a motorway. The four wheels represent the different types of generation: nuclear, renewables, gas and other sources. The road is the electricity grid connecting everything. We are the driver: the people, businesses and industries that consume electricity.

The journey and the puncture

Everything was going well. The car was travelling at a steady speed, with its wheels turning in harmony. Then one of the tyres suddenly suffered a puncture.

That puncture could have been caused by many things: a pothole in the road, like a possible overload or technical failure; a stone on the tarmac, like extreme weather conditions; or even an act of vandalism, like a cyberattack. At the time of publication, it was not yet known with certainty what had caused it.

The car loses control

With one wheel damaged, the car loses stability. To prevent a more serious accident, the safety system responds and the car stops.

That is what is known as a power outage: the supply is cut to protect the system as a whole.

Repairing it and setting off again

Once the car has stopped, technicians act like mechanics: they change the wheel, check that everything is in order and gradually get the car moving again.

But simply starting the engine is not enough. They need to make sure that it can travel safely again; in other words, that the electricity grid can operate normally and meet all demand.

During that process, some services gradually return. In this simplified example, lighting comes back first, followed by trains and then the internet. They do not all return at the same time, and some areas may take longer to recover their normal rhythm.

And the cause?

At the time of publication, the reason for the puncture was still being investigated. It could have been a simple unforeseen incident on the road or something more serious.

What matters is that the system is designed to stop the car in time, repair it and get it moving again without it crashing.
